"Respect the Laws of the country where you live ... when those laws are not contrary to Islamic Principles."
I'm sorry, but what else can a sincere believer in anything say? Thus no Christian could say anything different (mutatis mutandis). Equally we would not think much of a democrat who said, "Respect the Laws of the country where you live, even when those laws are contrary to Democratic Principles."
