My Cultural Life: Haras Rafiq

Haras RafiqThis week, our guest is Haras Rafiq, co-founder and Executive Director of the Sufi Muslim Council. Haras is also CEO of Crescentlive TV and the Crescentlife lifestyle magazine

What’s the latest download on your iPod?

Al Mu’allim by Sami Yusuf

What was the last thing you saw at the theatre?

Alan Ayckbourn’s Absurd Person Singular – All good things come in threes (the second act is the best).

Tate Britain or Tate Modern?

I have not been inside Tate Modern, although I did try on one occasion but it was too crowded and the queue was far too long.

What are you reading at the moment?

Ed Hussein’s The Islamist - for the second time - just ticking the bad guys off my list.

Which cultural figure from the past or present would you most like to meet or have met?

Muhammad Ali. I had the privilege to meet him two years ago. Even though he could not speak properly, his wit and charm surrounds him.

Which cultural figure from the past or present do you think is the most over-rated?

Kurt CobainKurt Cobain – The lead singer from Nirvana who killed himself to “get out”. He would have been shocked at his iconic status. People have turned him into exactly the very thing that he did not want to become. He could have prevented it by staying alive.

And the most under-rated?

(I can’t decide between these two)

Meera Syal – She created the space for the British “Asian” community to enter mainstream entertainment with classics such as Bhaji on the Beach and Goodness Gracious Me. Believe everything that you have seen in the latter.

Jonathan Ive – The designer of the iPod. Try to spend a day travelling around London without spotting one.

The X-Factor or Strictly Come Dancing?

Definitely Strictly Come Dancing.

You’re asked by a paper to review either The Magic Flute or We Will Rock You. Which do you choose?

We Will Rock You

Have you ever walked out of a play, film, concert or other production?

No, but I have slept through many.

Before being sent to your desert island, you're allowed to choose your three favourite films to take with you. What would thCaptain Jack Sparrowey be

Some Like it Hot (Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn)

Marx Brothers’ Duck Soup

Pirates of the Carribean (The curse of the Black Pearl) how on earth Johnny Depp did not get an Oscar is beyond me.

An oscar for Johnny Depp's English accent - I think not. However, I did like your crescentlive.tv website

How can you like Ed Husseins book? It is filled with contradictions, although I would like to know more about his conversion back to normality.
BTW, Kurt Cobain's death was pronounced by coroner as suicide.

The SMC is just another political setup backed by you and Azhar Ali to access DCLG PVE and Community Cohesion funding.

You were wrong to represent your comments, views, practices and beliefs to be the beliefs of all ' Muslims '.

You are part of the sufi council, and just like you said on the big questions show bbc 1 on 27/09/09, that you worship and ask through something that Allah created, such as a saint or dead person, which is totally wrong, and is idol worship.

It is Shirk, and it is a sin that Allah will not forgive. It is wrong for a person to be alive and to intercede, let alone a person who is dead. That dead person probably does need you to pray for him, but not to him, or to ask him to intercede. Astagfarullah.

For example if your family member cooked food for you and we always Thank Allah and before we eat we say Bismillah, and your family member who cooked the food for you is expecting you to say thankyou, But you go outside and thank the cat or the tree or the grass or even the ground. So tell me who cooked the food for you?, and who deserves the thankyou?, and who is the One that created the Heavens and the Earth and everything in it, Allah. So worship Allah alone and give thanks to Allah.
